Introduction

Hello!

My name is Allison and I am a first-year Japanese student at Columbia University. I'm writing this blog to practice and get feedback on my Japanese writing. I'm taking Japanese because I love learning Asian languages. Being so different from English makes them really interesting to me. I took Chinese in high school, but decided to try something different in college. I also have a lot of friends who are learning Japanese, and I think the culture is really cool. Especially sushi, which is my favorite food!

The hardest part of taking Japanese so far has been speaking. It's hard for me to remember grammar structures and vocab quickly enough to talk fluidly. However, I think I'm doing pretty well with writing Hiragana. I'm excited to learn Katakana and Kanji, and hopefully get comfortable with speaking. The class is a lot of fun so far, so I'm looking forward to another two years of this language!

Thank you for reading!
-Allison

  1. Hi there Allison, I'm a first-year Japanese student at the University of Notre Dame, where we're doing a similar blog program. Your post made me curious about the differences between Chinese and Japanese, and it'd be awesome to hear your opinions on how the two are different from one another. Sorry for posting in out of the blue, but after seeing your post I couldn't help but ask XD

  3. Hi guys, it's great to hear from you! I'm finding that Chinese and Japanese are actually very different. As I understand it, a given kanji character means the same thing in both languages, but that's about where the similarity ends. Chinese has no phonetic alphabet, words are said completely differently, and the grammar is very different as
well. For instance, Chinese has no verb conjugations- you use the same form of a verb for every tense. There are a few particles in Chinese, but usually you don't need any. Also, the basic sentence structure in Chinese is actually Subject + Verb + Object- the same as English and nothing like Japanese. Sorry if I just nerded out a lot. Let me know if you guys have any other questions!

    1. I also like both those movies! But my favorite movie is Inception, and my favorite book series is Game Of Thrones. I haven't read any Japanese novels, maybe I will be able to when I get better at the language :)
